IncluKIT: Inclusive Intercultural Communication Training Kit for Initial Reception of Migrants

IncluKIT is a training kit aimed at the whole spectrum of volunteers and professionals involved in the initial reception of newly arrived migrants in EU countries. It was developed as a collaborative effort between researchers from the FORTHEM alliance of European universities and practitioners from civil society. More specifically, IncluKIT is a co-creation pilot project of the FORTHEM Lab Diversity & Migration carried out in partnership with SIETAR Europa, SIETAR Switzerland, the SIETAR SIG Migration and diversophy®.

The kit focuses on the analysis of mismatched expectations and misunderstandings during the transitional phase of reception. It is designed for all the people working with migrants, based on an in-depth study of their respective needs. Interviews were carried out with volunteers and professionals during an initial research phase, to identify the common issues that occurred during migrant reception. In a second step, 18 cases of accounts of interactions between migrants and service personnel (critical incidents) were selected as a basis for the kit. These real-life stories were then gamified using and designed in a user-friendly format. The training kit is accessible free of charge to be used in various contexts (state-sponsored institutions, NGOs, educational/academic communities, private businesses) and adapted to specific local realities: https://www.forthem-alliance.eu/inclukit

The workshop aims to demonstrate how IncluKIT can be used in practice to researchers and practitioners present at the congress. We will conduct a facilitated session for one or two small groups with printed out material, followed by a debrief and an open discussion about the session and the training tools. The objective of the workshop is to discuss the practical application of critical, constructivist approaches to interculturality in the context of migrant reception.
